A goldsmith made the handmade gold setting for this ring of 15 karat yellow gold. The circa date is 1860 to 1870 Civil War period. The setting is set with two seed pearls that are 2 mm each. The focus of this pendant is the ROYAL amethyst gemstone that is 80 points of a carat each in weight. Amethyst is one of the Favorite Victorian gemstones because of the vibrant purple color.
Purple has long been considered a royal color, so it is not surprising that amethyst has been so much in demand during history. Fine amethysts are featured in the British Crown Jewels and were also a favorite of Catherine the Great and Egyptian royalty. Amethyst, transparent purple quartz, is the most important quartz variety used in jewelry.
