Victorian Revival Set with a date of approximately 1950 to 1960. The cameos are carved of a thick sea shell, and natural Bohemian Garnets surround each jewelry item.
Cameos made lovely, portable souvenirs for tourists visiting the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum. When the travelers returned home, their friends were enchanted with these small works of art. Within a short time, Italian cameo artists had shops in England, France, and America. These craftsmen carved cameos in the ancient styles or any other designs the purchaser might select.
The January 1850 issue of Godey's Magazine included the following note: "Peabody the celebrated Cameo Portrait Cutter, 140 Chestnut Street, is kept busily engaged with the portraits of some of our most eminent citizens.'"
The motif is of a Classical Woman, which was a prevalent theme to give to women of the Victorian period. The size of the brooch in which the bale is folded downs 1 3/4 tall by 1 1/2 wide, with the bale up to be worn as a pendant the size is 2 inches tall and 1 1/2 inches wide. The ring is 3/4 of an inch tall, and 5/8 of an inch wide with the band of the ring is a size 6. The size of the post backed earrings are 5/8 of an inch tall and 1/2 of an inch wide.
