E652 Civil War Era, Amethyst Crown Set in A 15 karat Rose Gold Ring:

E652

This ring was handmade by a goldsmith about the year 1860 of 15 karat rose gold. The ring is set with a natural faceted hand cut Amethyst Gemstone of 5 carats of an oval cut. The setting with this style of prongs is called Crown Set; because looking at the side view, the stone looks as if a Crown holds it. The setting has beautifully detailed shoulders in this quality gold work.

Amethyst: a Royal color - Purple has long been considered a royal color, so it is not surprising that amethyst has been so much in demand during history. Fine amethysts are featured in the British Crown Jewels and were also a favorite of Catherine the Great and Egyptian royalty. Amethyst, transparent purple quartz, is the most important quartz variety used in jewelry. Leonardo Da Vinci wrote that amethyst was able to dissipate evil thoughts and quicken the intelligence.
It must be purple to be amethyst, but it can display a range of shades including deep purple, light lilac, lavender, and mauve.

The ring and gemstone are in excellent condition and a size 5 1/2 now but can easily be resized if needed.
