E576 Lovely Civil War Era, Bohemian Garnet Necklace:

E576

This beautiful necklace is circa 1860 and handmade setting made of Vermeil.
Definition of Vermeil, a French word which came into use in the English language, mostly in America, in the 19th century as an alternative for the usual term silver-gilt is a combination of sterling silver and gold, and other precious metals. It is commonly used as a component in jewelry. This necklace is gold-filled over the Vermeil with 9-karat rose gold, making it exceptional to have the extra gold in the setting.
All parts of this necklace setting are handmade and one of a kind.
The necklace is set with deep red Bohemian natural garnets that were most treasured in the Victorian period. Each rich, deep gemstone is hand cut and handset to reflect the candlelight of the “Evenings Social” affairs. The work of art of the necklace also has hand selected natural garnets that match in color, important to note since there are many shades of red garnets. The design of the overall creation is a floral theme with three large clusters each having elegant dangles. The gemstone Garnet means “Virtue” in the Victorian Language of Gemstones.
The necklace is 16 inches long it has a strong clasp with more garnets covering the clasp plus a safety chain was added. The necklace is beautiful and in excellent condition.
