E566 Original Civil War Era Gold-Filled Earrings set with natural Garnets:

E566

The earrings are handmade of 12 kt gold filled and in a classical geometric or Fan design. The term "gold-filled" is used to describe articles of jewelry made of base metal, which is covered on one or more surfaces with a layer of gold. In this case, the earrings are made of sterling, and layers of gold are over the sterling base. Gold filled started in the mid-19th century and replaced “Pinchbeck,” but nothing like the gold washed jewelry of today. The Victorian gold filled will not wear off on earring because of the many layers of gold. Each earring holds a hand cut natural Bohemian Garnet of 2 mm's round cut. The earrings are in excellent condition and durable to wear. They are 11/4 inches long and 1/2 inches at the widest area. They are circa dated to 1855 to 1865.
Original period earrings are hard to find today, and this pair has a great look for Victorian Day Earrings.
