The earrings are handmade of 12kt gold filled and hand engraved detail, of a "Garter" on the front of the earrings. It this time period Queen Victoria was made a member of the Order of the Garter. The Order of the Garter (formally the Noblest Order of the Garter) is an order of chivalry founded by Edward III in 1348 and regarded as the most prestigious British order of chivalry (though in precedence inferior to the military Victoria Cross and George Cross) in England and the United Kingdom. This them was popular in Victorian time also to honor the Queen.
The term "gold-filled" is used to describe articles of jewelry made of base metal, which is covered on one or more surfaces with a layer of gold. In this case, the earrings are made of sterling and layers of gold are over the sterling base. Gold filled started in the mid-19th century and replaced “Pinchbeck”, but nothing like the gold washed jewelry of today. The Victorian gold filled will not wear off on earring because of the many layers of gold. The ear wires were originally fish hook wires but were changed when pierced earring style went out of favor. The earrings can be changed back to wired is desired. The earrings are in excellent condition and strong to wear. They are 1 3/4 inches long and 3/8 inches at the widest area and are in excellent condition.
