E555 Museum Quality Enamel, Blue Sapphire Earrings with Foxtail Tassels:

E555

These earrings are ornate high Victorian styling circa 1860 to 1870 and test 15- karat yellow gold.  A design element of the time was often included fringe dangling and swaying below the archaeological and Renaissance designs. English fringe (often referred to as bearded fringe) was composed of densely grouped strands of chain or tiny rods or cones, also called Foxtails. The earrings are set with 4 -1 mm sapphires and a center sapphire of 40 points in each earring. The background of the front of the earring is hand enameled in a white color.
Enamel is a type of allochromatic glass that consists usually of quartz sand, iron oxide, potassium oxide (potash) and borax (flux). These components form a transparent and colorless fondant after firing at temperatures between 700 and 900 degrees Celsius. Their plethora of colors is established by the addition of different metal oxides and/or chlorides. After thoroughly crushing and washing these materials a hydrated mass is formed (a fondant) which is then applied on a suitable, and completely clean metal (typically gold, silver or copper alloys).

Sapphire Gemstone Information:
The sky is just a gigantic blue sapphire stone into which the earth is embedded – this belief was cherished in ancient times. In fact, does there exist a better image to describe the beauty of an immaculate sapphire of purest blue? This color, which is strongly associated with sapphire, is also linked to emotions such as sympathy and harmony, friendship and loyalty. These emotions belong to features, which are permanent and reliable – emotions where overwhelming and fiery passion is not the main element, but rather composure, mutual understanding, and unshakeable trust. In the Victorian Language of Gemstones Sapphires meant “Innocence”.
“Sapphires were used by the Romans for the development of greater trade with India, at the time of Emperor Trajan. “SAPPHIRE- is the birthstone of September. The hardness of sapphires is 9 and they are considered a precious gemstone. A diamond is a hardness of 10, in comparison.
The lovely earrings are 2 inches tall with the ear wires and 3/4 of an inch wide. They are in excellent condition and comfortable to wear. A quality and lovely find in today's market.
