The lovely handmade gold setting for this pendant was made by a goldsmith of 16 karats yellow gold and was tested by a professional goldsmith. The date is 1860 to 1880 time period when the pendant was made. The bale is on the back top of the pendant. The pendant is set with four round pearls that are 4mm each and one oval pearl at 7 mm x 5 mm. There are also 50 natural seed pearls set into this pendant. All pearls are natural ocean pearls. The focus of this pendant is the Amethyst gemstones with center natural hand cut bright gemstone weighing 2.5 carats and the Amethyst drop weighing 2.25 carats. Amethyst is one of the Victorian favorite gemstones because of the rich purple color.
Purple has long been considered a royal color so it is not surprising that amethyst has been so much in demand during history. Fine amethysts are featured in the British Crown Jewels and were also a favorite of Catherine the Great and Egyptian royalty. Amethyst, transparent purple quartz is the most important quartz variety used in jewelry.
The meaning of the gems set in this pendant as believed in the Victorian Language of Gems; Amethyst meant “Peace of Mind and Pearls were for “Modest Loveliness” a sweet thoughtful gift also for today as a beautiful antique item of jewelry.

The size of the pendant 1 7/8 of an inch tall and 1 5/8 of an inch wide. The overall design of the pendant is really nice and would be noticed today as a lovely period item of quality. The pendant comes with a new 18 inch 14 karat gold chain.
