B535 Original Civil War Era Gold-Filled Earrings:

Victorian Gold Filled circa Earrings

The earrings are handmade of 12kt gold filled and hand engraved detail, of an IVY LEAF on the front of the earrings. In the language of Plants trees and Flowers the Ivy Leaf means “wedded love”.
The term "gold-filled" is used to describe articles of jewelry made of base metal, which is covered on one or more surfaces with a layer of gold. In this case the earrings are made of sterling and layers of gold are over the sterling base. Gold filled started in the mid-19th century and replaced “Pinchbeck”, but nothing like the gold washed jewelry of today. The Victorian gold filled will not wear off on earring because of the many layer of gold. The ear wires fish hooks style and have been replaced. The earrings are in excellent condition and strong to wear. They are 1 ½ inches long and 1/2 inches at the widest area.
Original period earrings are so hard to find today and this pair has a nice Victorian look. The current insured value as of September 2015 is $900.00
