The gemstone is a wonderful rich blue color which is the lapis part; the matrix within the stone is the lazuli. Lapis Lazuli is a semi-precious stone. The mines in Afghanistan were being worked six or seven thousand years ago. In Ur, kings sharpened their swords on it, believing they would become invulnerable. It was used by the Assyrians and Persians for making seals. It has been widely used as a pigment, but it was always very costly. Lapis Lazuli gave the vivid blue used by medieval artists for the Virgin Mary's cloak, called ultra-marine. This Pin is from Pennsylvania and is Circa 1850. The pin can also be worn with a chain as a pendant. The size is 1 1/8 wide and 5/8 of an inch tall. The pin/pendant is in wonderful condition and fine quality, and has the original T-bar and C-clasp.
