Handmade cross of sterling silver setting , circa 1860. Sterling beads on the ends of point of the cross. The cross is set with ten hand cut natural amethyst which are 2 carats each making this cross 20 carats for the total carat weight. Each gemstone is held with 13 prongs.

Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz and the most valued member of the quartz family. It must be purple to be amethyst, but it can display a range of shades including deep purple, light lilac, lavender and mauve. Its purple color made it a stone of royalty for many thousands of years.
The size is 2 ½ inches tall and ½ wide. This is a beautiful Civil War Era Cross which would have been worn with a ribbon in the mid-19th Century. Insured value is $1600.00 as of June 2011.
