19th Century Man’s Sardonyx Intaglio Warrior Ring


This is a handmade ring of 9 karat yellow gold tested but marked 10kt. It is set with a large 18mm X 14 mm gemstone. The hard stone Sardonyx is cut into an Intaglio a helmeted Warrior I believe to be the god Mars which was a popular theme for Victorian men.
Sardonyx is a form of onyx which is reddish brown. It was popular with the ancient Greeks and Romans who carried into battle talismans of sardonyx engraved with images of heroes such as Mars or Hercules, believing that this would bring courage and victory.

Sardonyx has long been used to fashion cameos (carved raised figures) and intaglios (the reverse of cameos). This gemstone is found throughout the world. The most attractive specimens are found in India, but material also is mined in Czechoslovakia, Brazil, Uruguay, Germany, and in the United States.
The ring is a size 12 now and it has been enlarged in the past but can be resized again if needed and it is excellent condition.
